The term Tuareg is used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and history. They primarilly inhabit the Sahara in a vast area that stretches from far southwestern Libya to southern Algeria, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Traditionally a nomadic people, small groups, or clans, of Tuareg are also found in northern Nigeria.
Historically, the Tuareg moved southward from the Tafilalt region to the Sahel under their founding queen, Tin Hinan, who is thought to have lived between the 4th and 5th century. To this day, the matriarch's 1,500-year-old tomb is located in the Sahara at Abalessa in the Hoggar Mountains of southern Algeria. The Tuareg camel caravans were the primary method of trans-Saharan trade until the mid-20th century when trains and trucks took over. Many groups have slowed moved southward over the past 2,000 years in response to pressures from the north and the promise of more prosperous land in the south. Today, many Tuareg live in sedentary communities in the cities that border the Sahara that were once the great trade centers of western Africa. Still, to this day, the Tuareg are known for their impeccably crafted figures they primarily use for trade across the African continent.
Authentic old carved wooden pulleys are used to pull a load of water out of the ground. Through years of use, the hard wood is petrified by a combination of water, soil sediment, and the elements to make the pulleys denser and stronger; making them just that much better at pulling water from the ground.
